ARTIST: Dave Mason
TITLE: Alone Together
YEAR RELEASED: 1970
CHART ACTION: #22 US
SINGLES: Only You Know and I Know (#42 US), Shouldn’t Have Took More Than You Gave
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Nah
LINEUP: Dave Mason and friends like Jim Capaldi, Delaney & Bonnie, Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge and a Who’s Who of hot shot session players from the Leon Russell / Eric Clapton orbit.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Former Traffic-er records first solo album in a vein much like his work with Traffic. It’s a nice album.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Pleasant. That’s what this album is. There’s some highlights for sure (the singles and tracks like Look at You Look at Me, for instance) but nothing that you jump up and down and say YES YES YES.
There’s nothing that’s bad either, just pleasant as it were. They are songs that you can listen to while doing something else and not feel the urge to stop what you were doing to listen OR change the station. Pleasant.
That’s OK in and of itself. We need pleasant albums, too. So I’m keeping this in my rotation for the next time I’m doing something like setting up a piece of electronic equipment.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: Mason was in and out of Traffic at least three times from 1967-71. Mercurial sort, or he really couldn’t get along with Steve Winwood.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No.
GRADE: B : Pleasant, as I said.
