WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Seattle / Canadian band releases record that straddles hard rock and fantasy / folk.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Despite the presence of Magic Man and Crazy on You, the debut from Heart was equal hard rock and equal folkie – as the title cut was featured three times on the record itself. That song works each time; it’s a great framing devise. The other three mellowish songs don’t – they fall into clichés and / or just meander.
Meanwhile, two classics (noted above) and Sing Child prove that Heart’s strengths, at this juncture, was rocking out. Crazy on You is especially strong and well put together for a rookie band. Anyone listening to this should have known there was something about them that would have staying power.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: This was released in Canada in 1975, and only after Magic Man (the second single), started to hit. It hit the states in 1976.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No.
GRADE: B+: The non-Dreamboat Annie mellow cuts drag this down. Fortunately they can be skipped over easily. The rest of it is top notch.
