WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Canadian hipster wiseacres record first for-real album full of witticisms and harmonies.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Back in 1992, this group of Canadians were a breath of fresh air amongst the sourpusses in the grunge era. They had a clean, bright sound, sang really tight harmonies and were rather amusing.

It took a while for them to break in the US, but Canada loved them almost right away – their independently recorded 5-song cassette EP went Gold. That’s something that would never happen here.

This debut’s high points are all of the humorous songs, though the more serious songs are nicely played and sung as well. Frankly, I was surprised by this record, I thought it would have more filler. Now some songs probably needed to be trimmed off – at 15 tracks that’s a lot – but the non-familiar-to-the-US songs are just as well-crafted as the others.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Despite the success of their tape, they still had to win a radio station contest to get the money to record this album.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No.

GRADE: B+: A bit overly long, but a solid album.
