WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: “Alternative” UK band starts their world conquest, maybe by boring everyone to death?
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Coldplay was divisive even in 2000. Somehow they got tagged with “alternative” when they’re as mainstream they can be. They had careerist ambitions, non-threatening arrangements, and a shit-ton of engineers and producers to make everything sound just-so. Not-so-alternative.
This album, has its moments. Detaching it from the love or the hate, you can admire the construction of the songs, the production values, the musicianship. The songs themselves, some of them, are good pop songs. Not “alternative” – good pop songs.
God almighty, though, they’re so freakin’ SERIOUS about everything. You can tell even on this album they’re just so pretentious and serious. Sometimes, they’re boring. Yeah, boring.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: Chris Martin didn’t like the album. Well, then, why did you record it?
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No.
GRADE: C+: I liked about half of it – had to wake up to write this review regarding the other half.
