TITLE:  Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie

SINGLES: Thank U (#17 US, #5 UK), Joining You (#28 UK), Unsent (#58 US), So Pure (#38 UK)

OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Not unless you bought it – radio didn’t quite support this one.

LINEUP: Alanis Morissette, Glenn Ballard, Benmont Tench, Gary Novak, Joel Shearer, Nick Lashley, Chris Chaney

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: An intricate, intriguing follow-up to her huge breakout album didn’t hit the sales heights, but is a better and deeper record all-in-all.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: It’s not easy to follow up a mega smash, as there are so many expectations. It’s even harder to try to not clone your most recent album – to keep reaching out and exploring artistically.

Morissette does this here. It’s a varied and complicated album. There’s not a clone of her big hits, which is quite refreshing. Her voice is still a wild card – an untamed beast at times. It’s also long (17 tracks) and probably could have been trimmed, though she also piled up a bunch of other songs that didn’t make the cut.

The production is also more advanced. Not every cut was aiming for the radio, which is great. But radio didn’t embrace even the radio-friendly cuts except “Thank U”. It sold about a fifth of the units. But, it’s better.

NOTES & MINUTAE: She wrote “Baba” and “Thank U” after a trip to India.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION:  There were bonus tracks in other countries, and some of the demos and unrleased songs have leaked online.

GRADE: B+: A bit too long, but still a complicated, intriguing record that merits repeat listenings.
