TITLE: The Neville Brothers

YEAR RELEASED: 1978

CHART ACTION: None

SINGLES: Washable Ink

OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: No

LINEUP: Art Neville, Aaron Neville, Charles Neville, Cyril Neville + session players

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: The first family of New Orleans funk and soul finally unites in one band, but unfortunately deliver an undercooked album.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Sure, it’s a little bit disco, but “Dancing Jones” is a great opener, and gives you hope that the union of the Neville Brothers will add up to a fearsome unit.

The brothers can certainly sing well together, but the material isn’t that up to par and the performances sterile. The ballads that go to Aaron don’t use his angelic voice to its strengths.

I was expecting more, frankly, since later Neville Brothers albums cook with gas. This didn’t sell and they got dropped within a year. I can see why.

NOTES & MINUTAE: The band formed officially when the Meters broke up, freeing up Art and Cyril.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION:  No.

GRADE: C: A lot of this is going to be exiled. Don’t start here for an intro to the Nevilles.
