WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Collection from Jennings’ 60’s material, which have a few essential tracks for Jennings fans.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Waylon Jennings was an outlaw country icon, but it took a long time for him to get there. Like Willie Nelson he had to suffer through a Nashville production mill that ran contra to his artistic ideas. However, the more hits he got the more he was able to impart his will and vision, until he finally got thoroughly ‘outlaw’ in 1972.

This collection of material dating back from the late 50’s collects singles and album cuts, and may be the best overview of the material Jennings produced at that time. Some of the albums themselves are streaming, but they are hit + filler and the Jennings wasn’t too keen on that filler and it shows. He tried to get as much grit as he could.

The crucial cuts are the singles above, but it’s nice to hear Jennings’ distinctive voice on the covers of some well-known songs. There are a few clinkers, but all in all it’s decent.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: I’m going to start reviewing Jennings’ albums in the 70’s. There are some that are missing from streaming so I’ll try to pick them up somehow around the internet.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No, but several compilations have some of this material – not all.

GRADE: B-: For advanced Jennings fans, but it fills some gaps in the Jennings’ discography for them.
