WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Another 1966 album by the Dorsey / Toussaint partnership is again filled with great songs and joyful performances.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Hot on the heels of Ride Your Pony, and taking advantage of the huge hit in Working in the Coal Mine, Dorsey and Toussaint assembled this collection and got it out in late 1966. Momentum was theirs, and it was the most successful original album by Dorsey.

It’s pretty fabulous, really. Just hearing Dorsey sing these tracks is an experience, because he has so much joy and life in his voice. Everyone knows (well, I hope they do) “Working in the Coal Mine”, but even some trifle like “A Little Dab Will Do Ya” is fun to hear because the musicians are tight and solid, and Dorsey’s having fun.

It’s a shame that Dorsey didn’t have another big hit, because it seemed that Amy Records concentrated on singles, and if they didn’t have a lot of chart action they didn’t bother with an album. Alas.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Dorsey had an auto repair business that he still kept while he was touring.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yes, another 12 cuts from other singles and b-sides released up until 1969.

GRADE: A-: Fun New Orleans Soul is good for your soul.
