Godsmack – Godsmack

ARTIST: Godsmack                 220px-Godsmack-Godsmack_(album_cover)

TITLE:  Godsmack

SINGLES: Whaetever (#116, #19 Alternative, #7 Mainstream), Keep Away (#31 Alternative, #5 Mainstream), Voodoo (#102, #6 Alternative, #5 Mainstream), Bad Religion (#32 Alternative, #8 Mainstream)

LINEUP: Sully Erna, Tony Rombola, Robbie Merrill.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: First major label album (and a remix and remaster of their debut independent release) is straight forward 90’s metal with only a couple of cuts standing out from the pack.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Even for their first release, Godsmack was pretty much a journeyman metal outfit. Yeah, they had riffs, and some interesting progressions and solos. They weren’t really ‘nu-metal’ or whatever they called it, even though they had some upgraded sounds.

There’s nothing WRONG with this, per se. It’s good. The track “Voodoo” which breaks out of the mold from the rest of the album and is indeed chilling and fresh, saves it from just being run-of-the-mill. That they named a song “Bad Religion” is a minus – unless they got permission from the Epitaph group. Ah, well. 220px-All_Wound_Up_(album)

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Lead singer Sully Erna played drums on this album.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No, but this was released in 1997 as All Wound Up with one extra track.

GRADE: B-: It’s not bad, just not great.
