ARTIST: Patsy Cline
TITLE: 50 Golden Greats: The Complete Early Years
YEAR RELEASED: Compliation
CHART ACTION: None
SINGLES: The only charting one was Walking After Midnight (#12, #2 Country)
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Maybe?
LINEUP: Patsy Cline and session musicians
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Great sides from a great singer. These are not well known but are excellent.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Believe it or not, Cline really struggled to get a hit with traditional country songs and sounds. This compilation of Cline’s early work shows her excellence as a singer and interpreter, and you wonder why these didn’t chart.
“Walking After Midnight” was the only chart hit, but that shouldn’t keep you from this collection. There are a lot of tracks, and that may be a bit too much to bite off for a non-diehard, but I tried to find a song to jettison and so far have come up empty.
Cline would find greater success after 1960 (where this collection ends), but the stage was set here.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: These were released on Four Star records, based in Pasadena.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No
GRADE: A-: Sure, this may be a bit much to bite off, but it shows the depth and greatness in Cline’s voice.
