WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Second VH album shows the pop sensibility of the band at times, but also shows the lack of depth in their material.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: “Dance the Night Away” showed that you didn’t have to sacrifice the hard rock to make a great pop song. In fact, there’s a little more of a pop influence amongst the guitar driven rock.
Yet, it’s a short record, with ten tracks, and at least three of those are blatant filler. (A weak-ish cover leads off the record, for some reason.) Even some of the stronger songs seem a bit like re-writes of their first album, saved by great Eddie Van Halen riffs.
I ate a lot of this up when I was in high school, but I also skipped a few tracks. You’d probably do the same.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: The back cover showed David Lee Roth making one of his trademark leaps. Allegedly, he broke his foot doing that jump.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No
GRADE: B-: Some great individual songs don’t make it a great album.
