OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: I mean, a badillion people have this thing, that’s a silly question.
LINEUP: Adele Adkins, Pete Biggins, Matt Allchin, Neil Cowley, Michael Tighe, Stuart Zender and others…
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Recent graduate from UK performing arts school submits songwriting demo. Becomes a hit on MySpace (!), which lead to one thing, then another, then this record….
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Adele’s distinctive voice, flexible enough to handle many genres, but always recognizable, is the star of this album. The most effective cuts are when it’s just Adele and either just a guitar, or a very spare production (piano and strings) – that’s when her voice shines.
On the others, when they break out the modern production, it seems a bit busy and Adele gets a bit lost in it. Her voice is powerful enough to carry a song without all of the goop attached to it.
The songs, most all written or co-written by her, show that she has some talent as a songwriter. They’re not perfect songs, but their believable and honest, and integrity is sometimes hard to find in the modern age.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: When she was in university, she wanted to work in A&R and not necessarily performing.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yes, bonus discs, bonus tracks, special editions, etc. Depends on what country and what format you want.
GRADE: B+: Overproduction on a few tracks detracts from them, yet it lives up to its reputation.
