WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Nashville teenagers form punk rock band. For some reason, they rock the UK, and provide hope that loud/fast/rules punk isn’t dead (at least not in 2006).

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Be Your Own Pet brought energy and some actual punk rock chords and attitude to the music scene in the mid-2000’s. They were darlings of the alternative press, the festival circuit, and the tastemakers in the UK for a brief moment. They were also only teenagers – kind of like it used to be in the old days.

Their first full-length, released after a trio of single/EPs that turned the UK and Japan on their ears, has energy and fire, and lots of good punk rock hooks. That’s a big plus.

It also has a tendency to have a lot of songs that sound similar and sometimes the sequencing runs them together, so it all becomes a blur.

Still, it’s a great record for those who are wistful for punk with some hooks.

NOTES & MINUTAE: At the same time she was in BYOP, Jemina Pearl was the bass player for Nashville band Cheap Time for a spell.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION:  No.

GRADE: B+. A little change-up or resquencing could have made this an A record, but it’s pretty darn good for punk fans.
