Big Black – Lungs

ARTIST: Big Black 220px-Big_Black_-_Lungs_cover

TITLE:  Lungs

YEAR RELEASED: 1982

CHART ACTION: None

SINGLES: It was a six-song EP

OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW:  Steelworker is the only cut you may have heard somewhere, but I doubt it.

LINEUP: Steve Albini and “Roland” (a drum machine). John Bohnen played sax on a cut.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Albini’s first Big Black record is a stark EP dominated by the drum machine, Albini’s unique guitar sound, and his over-the-top lyrics.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: The first six-song EP by Steve Albini’s Big Black is basically a solo album with one song having sax. Well, if you count the drum machine “Roland” there’s two people.

It’s very much a product of someone working out songs and trying things out. Some tunes sound quite finished and formed (“Steelworker”) while others, like “I Can Be Killed” sound like working demos.

The opening cut is really the one thing you’re going to save unless you’re a total Big Black junkie. Well, maybe “Dead Billy”, as it’s really his first offensive character study.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: The EP came with all kinds of junk inside of the cover, placed at random.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: It was part of a CD compilation called The Hammer Party. Now it streams on its own.

GRADE: C:  This really was meant for Albini to recruit other band members, as it is only a couple tracks are truly worthwhile.
