TITLE: Forest of Equilibrium
YEAR RELEASED: 1991
CHART ACTION: None
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Only if you were into dooooom.
LINEUP: Lee Dorrian, Adam Lehan, Mark Griffiths, Mike Small, Garry Jennings. Reverend Wolski and Helen Acreman added keyboards and flutes.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: After breaking away from Napalm Death, Dorrian forms a Doom (with a capital D) metal band but the first record is more boring than doomy.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: The worst thing a metal record can be is boring. Maybe I missed something, but this album (which I kind of was looking forward to hearing), is…boring.
The riffs never reach a point where they excite me. The vocals by Dorrian, a growl more than anything, blend into the background. Overall, the album just sits there, stuck in the sludgy mire of the songs.
I’m exiling this one, but going to give the band more chances as they’re one of the better metal bands of the 90’s. I just don’t like being lulled into a torpor by a metal band.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: Dorrian left Napalm Death because he was not a fan of the punk direction they were taking. This, yeah, this is almost the opposite.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No.
GRADE: C: I don’t mind DOOM metal at all; in fact I love it. But it’s got to be more exciting than this.
