WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: The best early works overview from the King of Nashville Guitar Pickers.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Chet Atkins was a great guitarist and a kingmaker in Nashville thanks to his production skills and his duties as a record company executive. Still, though, he was a guitarist first and foremost. This collection takes a broad look at Atkins’ RCA career from 1947 through 1977, with a lot of emphasis on his early work (released mostly on 78).
You know a lot of these songs in commercials and as instrumental beds on radio and tv shows, but being instrumentals you probably didn’t know who or what it was. Atkins showcases his clean, fluid style which still influences country and alt-country music to this day. He also was quite interested in other musical forms such as jazz and some of those elements come into play here.
This is a must have for any serious fan of guitar (any genre) or country music. He’s got other collections out there as well, but this is the first to get.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: He was a design consultant for Gretsch, who made Chet Atkins guitars for 25 years until 1980.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No
GRADE: A: A great collection for an important musician.
