SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: You mention the name Johnny Burnette to almost any rock fan, you’ll probably get a quizzical look, but you mention the song “Train Kept-A-Rollin’”, they’ll definitely know.
This is the early work of Burnette with the trio, and what’s surprising is that from the influential songs on this collection, nothing was a hit. For whatever reason, distribution or something else, these recordings on Coral Records didn’t make a dent on the charts.
Because of that, the group split and Johnny Burnette went to California to record for Liberty and had some success in a different vein of music before his untimely death in 1964. These recordings are his legacy though – for the most part outstanding early rock and roll.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: Dorsey and Johnny Burnette had an argument regarding the billing by their manager as “Johnny Burnette & the Rock ‘N Roll Trio”.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No
GRADE: A-: Like all grab bags of singles and sessions, there’s some fluff and some stuff that is definitely not up to par (which is why they were outtakes). The key cuts are vital to anyone’s understanding of rock and roll’s early days.
