WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Chicago blues album featuring solid blues professionals and virtuoso Mike Bloomfield.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Born in Chicago (a song they covered by the way), Paul Butterfield’s blues quartet was put together with guitarist extraordinaire Mike Bloomfield and formed one of the most influential US blues groups of the 60’s.
Butterfield’s vocals and harmonica, while strong, take a back seat to the lead guitar put on disc by Bloomfield and the backing of the rhythm section. Elvin Bishop’s rhythm guitar also helps Bloonfield work his magic. The material highlights some great Chicago blues standards (or soon to be standards) which introduced them to a wider audience.
It’s a record where the covers are performed with a care and love, and the originals fit in fairly well.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: This was the third try at recording the album, including one attempt to record it live at Newport.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No
