OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Fans of the Elephant 6 movement have this.

LINEUP: Hilarie Sidney, Robert Schneider, John Hill with Jim McIntrye, Kurt Heasley, Joel Evans, Jeff Mangum and Kyle Jones chipping in on occasion.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Rather twee indie psychedelic pop band’s first album is also near Ground Zero for the Elephant 6 collective of indie pop.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: The Apples in Stereo balance their sweet indie pop with some interesting psychedelic sounds and production. This helps some of the cuts from being way too twee.

The main Apple is Robert Schneider, who has a gift in melody and pop song structure. Drummer and vocalist Hilarie Sidney contributes some sweet backing vocals, but at times her contributions really make it a bit too sweet and syrupy.

There are a lot of melodies and hooks, running around, so you’ll find a few tracks that will tap your toes. It’s kind of lo-fi and that affects some of the things they were able to do. Fans of indie power pop will find some cuts they love.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: The band had a few EPs under their belt, and Schneider had been learning album production since age 15.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Two extra cuts for Japan.

GRADE: B+: I can hum along to most of this, it’s just some songs that are too sugary.
