TITLE: The Man, the King, the Girl
YEAR RELEASED: 1997
CHART ACTION: None
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: God no…
LINEUP: Rob Fisk, Satomi Matsuzaki, Greg Saunier.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Noise, weirdness, noise, weirdness, noise.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: I knew Deerhoof would be a tough slog – some of their stuff catches my ear and other stuff…well. All I can say is, be prepared.
They change up everything between releases, so you gotta sample ‘em all. This one is just noise rock (guitar and keyboards and drums all clattering around) for the most part with Matsuzaki singing some nonsense in a sweet voice. It may have been fun to MAKE this album though.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: Matsuzaki joined the band in 1995 one week after emigrating from Japan. Hello, there! Wanna play some noise?
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No.
GRADE: C: A few cuts I could deal with (it’s not ALL gonzo weird and there’s some melodies lurking about) but as I said, be prepared.
