WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Journeyman soul singer puts out great single and records an album after the song hits the Top 40.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: If you like 60’s soul, you’ll like this album. It’s full of ballads and up-tempo numbers that are all in the Motown / Stax vein. It’s not as compelling as the top Motown soul classics, but it’s an enjoyable 60’s soul record.

The problem I had is that the second half of the album on Google Play seems to have been converted from a vinyl album with skips. Same for Spotify. So I don’t know if the actual CD itself has skips or something else. Anyway, I had to exile the entire second side.

NOTES & MINUTAE: No other legit Dobie Gray album is available. Yes, not even the one with Drift Away. All of his other releases around are re-recordings made before he passed on. As always, avoid those. You can find Drift Away on some legit collections out there.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No.

GRADE: B- : The non-hits are pretty good; not filler at all.
