WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Prog metal becomes a real thing.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Now, many progressive rock albums in the past have been near ‘metal’ and many metal albums back then could have been ‘progressive’. (I mean, what’s Deep Purple or Rush or Budgie, really?) Yet the genre known as Progressive Metal (which…you genre people, whatevs) kind of began to take shape with this album.
It sounds like a 90’s metal album with progressive flourishes – musically complex, keyboard flourishes, metal riffs, intricate song constructions, the hallmarks of progressive rock with complex metal. Not speedy – in fact they’re slow and ballady at times.
I’m not 100% whole hog on this – I think there’s some pretentions and sometimes they fall into the trap of prog where it’s “Look at me wheedly-wheeee!” but it’s solid and “Pull Me Under” is a top-notch track.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: Their first album as Dream Theater had a singer who used to be in Franke and the Knockouts. Um….
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No
GRADE: B+: At times, there’s too much showing off for my tastes, but still a good, solid album.
