WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: DC area scene veterans combine forces to create a bottom heavy, menacing sound that draws on both punk and early post-punk.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: If a band has two bassists, you know the bottom’s going to be heavy. In this record, Girls Against Boys exploits that deep twin rumble to create a unique sound. Combine those two basses with McCloud punk-inspired riffs and his growl of a vocal, and you have something that’s intriguing and a tad bid unsettling.

It’s not unsettling enough to turn you away from listening though. All together it’s inviting as the band puts all of the pieces together well. Janney, along with his bass, adds keyboard textures as well that add to the mix. Though a song like “Satin Down’ is really all about the foreboding menace.

While not filled with hooks, it’s a decent record for when you need that darker atmosphere around.

NOTES & MINUTAE: They released an album and a couple of EPs the year before that seems to have vanished.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION:  No.

GRADE: B+: Two basses really make their sound unique for the time, and differentiate them from the rest of the punk / post-punk scene.
