ARTIST: The Gaslight Anthem
TITLE: Sink or Swim
YEAR RELEASED: 2007
CHART ACTION: None
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: This was a barely noticed indie release, but it got them a deal.
LINEUP: Brian Fallon, Alex Rosamilla, Alex Levine, Benny Horowitz
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Jersey rockers with debts to Springsteen, Petty and the Replacements make an actual old school rock-and-roll record.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Normal, every day rock and roll is a rare thing nowadays. Everything is split into sub-genres and sub-sub-genres and trying to please niche markets. Maybe the Gaslight Anthem is also that kind of band as well, but on their debut they were just playing rock-and-roll. A little anthemic, sure. A little growly and gravely, yeah. Rock-and-roll all the same, though.
Yeah, it may have some punk rock sensibilities in that the tempos are usually fast. I’m hearing Social Distortion and the ‘Mats in here a lot. Really, though, there’s also a lot of other rockers (listed above) in subject matter and attitude (if not sound).
The album goes by quickly. It’s a good listen, especially for driving or just hangin’ out.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: The song “I’da Called You Woody, Joe” is a tribute to Joe Strummer, another influence on the band.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No
GRADE: B+: It’s a good rock-and-roll record, for those who still like the rock-and-roll thing.
