WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Swedish high school friends form electronic dance group with many diverse hip-hop and jazz influences.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: What Little Dragon does best is incorporate jazz elements into electronica. That’s where they’re the strongest. Whether it’s the beat, or the chord structure, they’re best musically and Nagano is best vocally there.
This album takes some advantage of those strengths, and Nagano’s strenghs as a ballad singer. Some of the songs meander a bit, though and causes the listener to lose a bit of interest. At times they’re trying to do too many things at once. But, if you like electronica that isn’t just straight EDM, they’re a band to check out. I don’t think this will convert those who don’t dig electronics, though. There’s not enough pop or hooks.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: Nagano was the inspiration of the band name, as she tended to be a bit tempestuous in the recording studio.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: The Japanese version shakes things up, and the streaming version switches one song out for another.
GRADE: B-: Maybe this is too low, as I know it’s pretty good for what it is. But I want some more hooks.
