LINEUP: Jake Smith, Freda Love, Tina Barbieri, Geraldine Haas
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Ex-members of the Blake Babies and Antenna (and husband and wife) Jake Smith and Freda Love form their own band with tuneful alt-rock songs.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: The tangled family tree of the Blake Babies and the Lemonheads has a branch here, Bloomington’s Mysteries of Life. Formed after Antenna split up (itself an offshoot of the Blake Babies, who co-mingled with the Lemonheads – it’s tangled as I said), Smith and Love formed the band and got signed to RCA after a couple of local singles and appearances.
What we have is a hidden gem of the 90’s. Not every track hits (some of the slower ones linger a tad too long past sell-by time) but tunes like “Feel My Way”, “Hesitate” and “Going Through the Motions” definitely could have lit up Adult Alternative stations in the 90’s. The addition of Haas’ cello adds distinctive color to many songs.
I’d definitely try and seek this one out if you’re nostalgic for some good ol’ 90’s stuff that’s way better than Hootie and the Blowfish or whatever radio-fodder crap was infiltrating the same market.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: Smith and Love are now instructors at Northwestern.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yes, believe it or not, there are added tracks to this..
GRADE: B+: A great choice for those wanting to explore unknown 90’s artists.
