WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: TV-made teenage idol scores a lot of hits and some of them stand the test of time.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Ever since performers have performed, there have been idols, and teenage idols at that. Rick Nelson was one of the first made by television, thanks to his participation in his family’s sitcom. He then moved to music and after a while, thanks to picking some great tunes and having a great backing band.

Nelson improved as a vocalist as time went on as well. At first, he seemed bored, but then he put some emotion into it. After a while, though, the hits dried up thanks to the Beatles and the evolution of the music biz, but Nelson stuck with it and moved his sound to fit the times, then his personal preference of country-rock by the late 60’s.

Some people LOVE Nelson. I’m lukewarm on him but he’s pretty good when he’s got good material.

I’m reviewing this collection as most of the albums Nelson released up until the late 60’s were hit+filler.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: He did not have a top 40 hit from mid-1964 to late-1969, then had one more in 1972.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No, but there are larger collections out there. Mine has 25 songs and covers his best teen idol hits + Garden Party.

GRADE: B: I’m an older guy and even I thought Nelson was square and old fashioned. But some of the songs are timeless.
