WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Debut long player from the singing sex kitten (and Frank’s daughter) is a decent 60’s album thanks to the Wrecking Crew’s arrangements.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: It took Lee Hazlewood to make Nancy Sinatra a star. Nancy had kicked around her dad’s record company for five years, with no luck. Hazlewood revamped Sinatra’s entire career, wrote songs for her and found other material, and viola, hit city! It didn’t hurt that Sinatra was now dressed in the most mod of outfits all the time, including boots, bikinis and mini skirts on occasions.
This is a decent 60’s pop album. The Wrecking Crew always is a joy to listen, even on the most mundane songs – and about half of the tracks reach above that status. Besides the big hit, her version of “As Tears Go By” (the Stones hit) is fabulous, and some of the other originals that Hazlewood wrote hit the mark as well.
There is filler her – some versions of popular songs just aren’t that great. But without a good compilation you just need to pick around those.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: I’m kind of stuck reviewing Nancy’s records one by one because there’s no streaming compilation of her hits. I was going to do the duets with Lee Hazlewood on their own (that’s an interesting cat, Hazlewood) but her solo stuff I was hoping to get a comp because of hits+filler.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yes, some bonus tracks.
GRADE: B-: The hit song is iconic and some of the rest decent. Some I exiled.
