WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: The Stax studio house band, Isaac Hayes and Sam & Dave create a standard for Memphis soul albums.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Sam & Dave had knocked around for years on several record companies, and in 1965 wound up with Stax Records. After a couple of singles with no action, they finally broke through with “You Don’t Know Like I Know”. The title cut followed and became a monster smash. This album was born.
Any record with the musicians from Stax is going to sound great, and soulful. Sam & Dave as vocalists are tremendous, and the songs Hayes and David Porter wrote (with some help from Steve Cropper and the gang) also fit right in. Most the album cuts have a soul and a passion that many lesser bands would never reach. The big change for the group from their earlier work was that Hayes wanted the duo to do more of a ‘call and response’ gospel type singing and had them swap leads as well on some songs.
You’ve heard the hits, no doubt, but going deep on a Sam & Dave album can be rewarding, and soulful.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: Be warned, there’s a 12-song collection called Sam & Dave that contained their failed singles cut for Roulette in the early 60’s. It doesn’t have the spark, the fire, nor the musicians.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No.
GRADE: A-: It’s got a few filler cuts but most all of it is great Memphis soul.
