SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: You need to listen to this record carefully, and a few times. Not because it’s difficult – though St. Vincent usually has some left turns in her songs, but because it’s pretty AND complicated. Her sense of melody, harmonics and lyricism are fully formed on this first album. It’s a rare artist to come out of the gate like this – especially when one is doing everything themselves.

There’s a sense of well-crafted quality here, especially on the first half of the album.

St. Vincent’s gotten a lot of buzz recently. She should have received the buzz back when this came out.

NOTES & MINUTAE: The album is titled after a running joke on Arrested Development.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: In Japan, there’s a bonus track

GRADE: A- : It’s deep and meaningful and other superlatives. I mean, wow, what a beginning!
