ARTIST: Status Quo
TITLE: 30 Gold Bars
YEAR RELEASED: Compilation
CHART ACTION: Not this one, though 12 Gold Bars hit #3 and 12 Gold Bars Vol. 2 reached #12 in the UK
SINGLES: Where to begin: Nah, let’s just say most all of these were hits, and big ones, in the UK.
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: The one you may know is their version of “Rockin’ All Over the World”. Maybe, or not…
LINEUP: Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Alan Lancaster, Andy Bown, John Coghlan (or Pete Kircher or Jeff Rich).
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Classic UK boogie band boogies to a plethora of hits with little or no action here in the US, which is surprising since mindless boogie rock has always been hits over here. It’s a mystery.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: While it’s not true that if you’ve heard one Status Quo boogie, you’ve heard them all. It’s close though. They have about four or five variations on the theme. This collection of 30 singles (basically their first two collections and a few extra songs) has everything you need from the boogie era (and probably more).
Some are faster, some are slower, some have harmonies, some do not. Basically, they were great comfort food for the UK public and radio. No outside trend really stopped them – prog, new romantics, punk, electronica, any of it. They did their thing. Their records charted. The end.
Their last charting hit was 2010, but they’re still at it today, rockin’ and rollin’ in 4/4 time.
NOTES & MINUTAE: Through their career, they’ve charted 60 singles in the UK, including 22 top 10 hits. They’ve had 17 top 10 original studio albums, including a 2014 acoustic (!) record.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Technically, this is.
GRADE: B: Listen to about five or six from this collection. You either like it or you don’t. It does rock all over the world, though!
