ARTIST: The Stone Poneys
TITLE: The Stone Poneys
YEAR RELEASED: 1967
CHART ACTION: #172 upon re-issue in 1975
SINGLES: Sweet Summer Blue and Gold
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Folkie and Ronstadt junkies only.
LINEUP: Bobby Kimmel, Kenny Edwards, Linda Ronstadt and session dudes.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Folkie sounds, folkie harmonies and the occasional Ronstadt solo. But it’s mostly hippy dippy stuff.
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: You find gems in the oddest places. A trio that was more a Peter Paul & Mary junior varsity group had in its midst a real singer. I mean a real singer. You can tell when she gets solos – the ears perk up.
Most of the stuff here is sung in harmony though. And it’s…ok. It all depends on your tolerance to mid-60’s hippie folk with a tinge of rock instrumentation.
Kimmel and Edwards wrote a lot of these songs and the others were folkie standards. Ronstadt can make anything sound like it’s worth hearing, but most of these were group sung. Alas.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: From the beginning, honchos and A&R men knew who the star was. The feedback they gave the group caused them to briefly break up twice before this was released. Ronstadt basically said she wouldn’t record without Edwards and Kimmel.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No.
GRADE: C+: Not feelin’ the vibe, man. I’m EXILING most of it, but a couple Ronstadt solos are keepers.
