ARTIST: The United States Three
TITLE: She’s the Word
YEAR RELEASED: 1996
CHART ACTION: None
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Maybe if you were hangin’ in Indianapolis in the late 90’s
LINEUP: Vess Ruthenberg, Andrew Angrick, Mark Cutsinger
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Veterans of the Zero Boys, Antenna, and others on the Indianapolis scene form a power pop band and release it in the Indianapolis area. It’s streaming now, BTW!
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: The three members of the US3 were all seasoned musicians and had made a lot of records in several styles. Power pop, though, was Ruthenberg’s balliwick, He spent time with Antenna (John Strohm’s post Blake Babies project) and the Zero Biys with Cutsinger and felt that power pop was his thing.
There are some great power pop tunes on here, “Neighborhood Association”, “Resonate with Me”, “Bitchin’ Time” to name three. Sometimes the songs go softer or into another direction, and still other times, near the end, you swear that you’ve already heard that song before.
I’m a fan, and there’s definitely here worth a few listens, so go right ahead and support my fellow Hoosiers!
NOTES & MINUTIAE: Cutsinger was in the Zero Boys almost from day one. Ruthenberg joined them upon their reformation in the early 90’s.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No
GRADE: B: An unbalanced record. I love me some of the tunes and the rest are either meh or repetitive.
